Understanding Kenyan Coffee Grades
The grading is espoused as follows;
- AA: This is the highest grade due to its superior flavour and large bean size (screen 17/18). It has a full body, bright acidity and rich fruity, berry-like or wine-like flavours.
- AB: This grade follows AA in size (screen 15/16) and consists of a blend of A and B beans. It offers a well-balanced combination of acidity and body.
- PB (Peaberry): Peaberry occurs when a coffee cherry produces one rounded bean instead of the usual two flat-sided beans. Its flavour is often more concentrated and intense, making it highly sought after.
- C: This grade consists of beans with a screen size of 14 or smaller. It is considered a lower grade and offers an affordable option for the mass market.
- E (Elephant): This grade consists of exceptionally large beans. Their uneven size can make consistent roasting difficult, and they are sometimes sold separately.
- T: This grade consists of broken or chipped beans of lower quality. It is commonly used to produce instant coffee and other affordably priced coffee products.
- MH/ML: This lower grade consists of sun-dried, naturally processed beans that are generally not washed. It is primarily supplied to the mass-consumption market.
The export coffee is packaged in solid woven bags to preserve the flavour, freshness and hygiene of this Kenyan gold.
